In our modern digitized world many people are craving a feeling of aliveness that they realize is missing. I see the carved figure in this painting, known as a 'manaia' in Maori culture, as being a wise old highly conscious Being, prompting us to be bold and live our lives with great presence and vigour. Manaia are traditionally seen in Maori carving with a bird's head and a serpent's tail. They are said to be the messengers between the earthly world of mortals and the domain of spirits and Sofia's interpretation of this is that in essence, manaia are angels.
