The story of Taane Shall Be My Guide
Taane Shall Be My Guide is a line translated from ancient Maori natural lore. In this work the three slender trees are symbolic signposts, guiding the way of the pouakai eagle through the moonlit forest.
Pouakai were the largest eagle known to have existed with a wingspan of 3 metres. The native South Island bird went extinct c.1400 A.D. due to its major food source, the moa, being hunted to extinction by humans. Maori natural lore reminds us of our shared destiny with this earth.
This painting's mystery and its astral quality similarly brings to our hearts, the knowledge that we are utterly indivisible from the natural world.
An excerpt from Maori natural lore
"I have taken their lives to sustain my own. They have fed upon the flesh of my kin to sustain theirs. I have prayed to their common ancestor to keep us at peace. He has answered my call and kept them bountiful. Our whakapapa is entwined. Their lives are entwined. Our destinies are entwined. You are the forest. I shall protect you. Tane shall be my guide."
