The story of Abyss

In "Abyss" we see a child from the great continent of Africa - a land that encompasses everything life has to offer, from the deepest challenges of war, hunger and suffering to the closest and most ancient connections to the earth, wildlife, and our roots as human beings, as well as vibrancy of culture, family and spirituality.

The little boy looks into a dark vortex, a strange and possibly scary abyss, this could be the whirlwind of his life, yet what lies beyond that is an unknown glint of light. For Sofia this is the light at the end of the tunnel which, although sometimes obscured by suffering, is the mystery and undercurrent of energy that makes up Life itself.

Much of Sofia's childhood was spent in Samoa, Sri Lanka and China due to her father's engineering work and her art celebrates the unity she sees amongst richly diverse cultures from around the world. Since 2004 Sofia's work has been exhibited and collected in the USA, Europe and throughout New Zealand. She has won three national art awards and been a three-time finalist in the Adam Portraiture Awards.
