9 x 15 metre wheatpaste of the digital image of Sofia Minson's original oil painting of Tiki Taane, November 2011
Sofia Minson was commissioned to do this public artwork by Newmarket Business Association in November 2011. The wheatpaste took 14 hours and was a huge 9 metres high x 15 metres wide. The image of her original oil painting of NZ musician Tiki Taane was applied in sections onto a wall in Teed Street in Auckland's high end retail district, blurring the line between the Fine Art of oil painting and the Street Art of large-scale wheatpasting onto public walls.
The artist was interested in sharing a proud, resiliant Maori face in the centre of New Zealand's largest city to remind people of how "indigenous creatives" such as Tiki Taane are evolving the culture of their ancestors, using their own artforms in today's digital world.
