The story of Omo's Beauty

This contemporary African work highlights a link between our modern conceptions of beauty and the bold, earthy sensuality and grace of ancient tribal cultures. The Omo Valley in southern Ethiopia is home to a complex mosaic of populations that have been isolated for centuries and that to this day have preserved their customs and practices, which originated in prehistoric times. The Dhaasanac, Surma, Mursi, Karo, Nyangatom and Arbore are peoples who are related to one another and who have mixed because of past migrations. At the same time each one is proud of its differences and its own identity. The woman in the painting has a sense of style and poise derived predominantly from the Surma and Mursi tribes. These peoples hold physical beauty and grooming in high esteem. Among other adornments, tight metal arm bracelets that accentuate muscle tone and large earring ornaments are part of a woman's seductive repertoire. It is common for Surma and Mursi to pierce and widen their ear lobes in order to insert large wooden disks in them.
