The story of Kaka Beak
Sofia describes the artwork "Kaka Beak": "Being an Aucklander this is a view I see nearly every day. I find myself enchanted by the ancient volcanic island of Rangitoto lying dormant in Auckland's busy Hauraki Gulf. Its very presence alludes to another time and place, without yachts, ferries, speed boats and people.
The contradiction of old and new inspired me to depict the familiar seascape in a surreal and primordial way. The kaka beak is an odd, prehistoric-looking native flower and the pouakai eagle, pictured flying across the sea, is a now-extinct native species, which had an enormous wingspan of 3 metres.
There is no hint of human habitation in this scene. Instead, in this world that glows an eerie shade of green, the kaka beak flower and pouakai eagle reign supreme."
