The story of Atawhai

"Atawhai" means to be merciful, tender-hearted and to nurture. The central hanging object in this work has the form of a manaia, which is an ancient mythical being seen in traditional Maori carving with a bird's head and a serpent's tail. The artist sees the manaia in this painting as a guardian, a mother and an angel, beautifully embodying the qualities of 'atawhai'.
