The story of Aoraki Gold

New Zealand's native wading bird the kakī, also known as the black stilt, is pictured here in its ornate golden Māori and sacred geometric designs with Aoraki Mt Cook in the background.

He iti pounamu

This precious endangered bird is like glacial gold; it is a little treasure - he iti pounamu. In 1981 the kakī's population declined to a low of just 23 and they have been intensively managed ever since. DOC's Kakī Recovery Programme near the town of Twizel in the Mackenzie Basin has a captive breeding centre, vital for the survival of the Kakī.

A Maori proverb

This whakataukī (Māori proverb) describes the importance of genealogy and the intimate connection between life and the natural enviornment.

Te Tōimairaki, me te hukapapa,
me te hukarere, me te ua,
he aitaka nā Raki i a Papa,
koia te taru ka tupu ai i te raumati

Morning mists, ice,
snow and the rain;
Descendents of Raki (Sky Father) and Papa (Earth Mother),
the shoots from which life grows
