"First Mother"
Original acrylic & flashe painting on loose canvas
960 x 1960mm, 2014
Sofia Minson's painting "First Mother" is Papatuanuku, the earth mother from Maori creationary mythology. Her curves are that of the landscape and she is surrounded above and below by Tukutuku patterns, which are traditional woven flax panels in marae (meeting houses). The appearance of this work is influenced by Pacific Tapa cloths and Minson has used an ink-like paint to create the wash effect.
