The story of Kakī
Kakī, also known as the black stilt, is a native New Zealand wading bird. In 1981 their population declined to a low of just 23 birds and they have been intensively managed ever since. DOC's Kakī Recovery Programme near the town of Twizel in the Mackenzie Basin has a captive breeding centre, vital for the survival of the Kakī.
