This painting of two kowhai flowers glowing in the shade of blue commemorates the birth of Sofia's first nephew. Following Maori custom, the child's placenta or whenua has been buried in a significant place, in this case at the base of a kowhai tree in the family garden. This practice reinforces the relationship between the newborn child and the land of their birth.
