The story of Angels Guide Her

This work features a surreal figure of Sofia's mother based on her beauty queen days in the 70s when she was Miss Geyserland (Miss Rotorua). Shafts of light shine onto the subject giving her a turquoise hue, which represents the light of her soul's pure consciousness. Carved manaia figures hang close by. 

Manaia can be seen in traditional Māori carving with a bird's head and a serpent's tail. The ancient mythical creatures are said to be the messengers between the earthly world of mortals and the domain of the spirits. Sofia's interpretation of this is that in essence, manaia are angels. And in essence, this painting portrays the guidance and love that Sofia's mother receives from her angels during her soul's journey through life.
