The story of Anahera

'Anahera' means 'angel' in Maori. The carved spiral object in this work has the form of a manaia, which is an ancient mythical being seen in traditional Maori carving with a bird's head and a serpent's tail. They are said to be the messengers between the earthly world of mortals and the domain of spirits and Sofia's interpretation of this is that in essence, manaia are angels. The three birds are New Zealand's famous giant Pouakai Eagles, which went exitinct c.1400 AD. The artist sees the manaia and the eagles in this painting as being anahera - guardians and messengers between the realms of spirits and mortals.
